Chocolate Shoo Fly Pie

(makes a 9-inch pie)
Preheat oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit
For the bottom layer:
1 cup sugar
1 tsp. corn starch
1 tsp. flour
1 1/2tsp. cocoa
1 egg, beaten
1/2 tsp. vanilla
1 1/2 tsp. butter
1 cup water
Unbaked 9-inch pie shell
For top layer:
1/2 cup brownsugar
1/2 egg, beaten
1 1/2 tsp. cocoa
1/4 cup lard
1/2cup molasses, mixed with 1/2 cup hot water
1/2 tsp. vanilla
11/4 cups flour
pinch of salt
1/2 tsp. baking soda
1/4 tsp.cinnamon

For the bottom layer, combine all ingredients in a saucepan and cook until thick, about 10 minutes. When completely cooled, pour into unbaked pie shell.
To make top layer, mix brown sugar, egg, cocoa, lard, molasses and vanilla until well combined. Add remaining ingredients and set aside until water has cooled. Pour on top of bottom layer and bake at 375 degrees for 40 minutes
