Homemade Candy Canes

2 cups sugar
1/2 cup corn syrup
1/2 cup water
1/4tsp. cream of tartar
3/4tsp peppermint extract
3/4tsp. red food coloring

Combine the first 4 ingredients in a saucepan cook over medium heat. Bring to a boil and cook to hard ball stage. Add peppermint and pour half the mixture into a greased tray and add food coloring to the other half and pour into separate greased tray. As soon as candy is cool enough to handle pull until nice and white form ropes with both mixtures. Twist ropes together cut into 8inch pieces form candy cane and place on wax paper. Allow to cool at room temperature and store in airtight container.
